How to Find Allergy Treatments that Work

By alank on June 13th, 2008

To find out the optimum treatment for their allergies, sufferers should make an appointment to see an allergist or an ear, nose and throat consultant. Correct diagnosing of an allergy will determine the right form of treatment required to ease the symptoms.

Enviromental factors play a big role as far as allergies are concerned and to that end, most allergists will want to ensure that their patients receive proper counselling in ways to reduce their exposure to the substances that can bring on allergic reactions. Taking precautionary measures can lessen how often the individual suffers an allergy attack, as well as the severity of the attacks.

There are numerous prescription and over the counter allergy medications available which can go some way to alleviating the various effects of allergies. Antihistamines and decongestants are very popular as are anti-inflammatory agents. Examples of these include corticosteroids, cromolyn and nedocromil. These medications serve to decrease the amount of inflammation in the airways. Effective low dosage corticosteroid sprays are also available which can be used by allergy sufferers to reduce inflammation of the nasal passages

Another type of allergy treatment are allergy shots. Allergy shots are recommended for individuals who suffer from moderate to severe allergic reactions and are also particularly beneficial for children. Doctors also recommend allergy shots for those individuals who find it impossible to stay away from the source of their allergy. People who suffer from pet dander allergies and will not give up their cats or dogs or those who have to work in an enviroment where the allergen is present fall into this category.

Allergy shots as a treatment are given in two phases which are termed the build up phase and the maintenance phase. Patients are given one shot a week and the dosage is increased over time as the person builds immunity to it. Also known as immunotherapy, this form of allergy treatment has been available for many years but the results are not the same for everybody. In the majority of cases the patient must be given shots for a period of time that can range anywhere from three to five years.

Recognizing Food Allergies in Children

By alank on March 21st, 2008

A food allergy is a very frightening allergic reaction to a certain item of food. Childrens food allergies are generally not identified until a youngster has been exposed to the allergen and experienced an adverse reaction. Parents of children who have got a food allergy are aware of how alarming and unpredictable the problem can be. Frequently our kids are exposed to food items that contain ingredients they are not even aware of. This in turn exposes them to the food they are allergic to. Food allergies, rather than food sensitivities, happen in the immune system. A true allergy to a food results in an extreme, life-threatening reaction caused by the immune system attacking the offending protein as it enters the body as well as the bloodstream.
