I remember when I was in college many years ago using mail order to get something I needed. I filled out the order form, attached my check and mailed it. Then I waited six to eight weeks – according to the fine print on the order form – for the package to arrive. And I didn’t think twice about it. Back then the “six to eight weeks” phrase in mail order was as ubiquitous has “have a nice day.” These days I see my college kids ordering things online and I wonder what would happen if they were told that it would take eight days, much less weeks. So much of this has to do with the speed of the Internet and the ease of paying by credit card. Credit card services have streamlined the process nicely.
